Fic Rec Meme stolen from [profile] castoffstarter

Recommend six fics on your journal. Go! They could be any six, or your six all-time favorites, or six recent discoveries. Or if you want, follow the list:

1) A fic with your favorite pairing: Keeping Christmas on the Death Train by Anise
2) A fic with a pairing you don’t normally read: I’m going to take the liberty of recommending two different stories (and two different pairings) here. Diminished by Lady Rhiyana and The Painted Past by Adelaide_e
3) An old fic: Desperado by Davesmom
4) A new fic: Draconis and Ginvera by cinnamon badge
5) A fic by someone you don’t know: Hallway Encounters by Pamie884
6) A fic by someone you know: Feast of Fools by Mynuet

Originally I was going to put some sort of description next to each story, but I don't think I will.  I've enjoyed all of them, give 'em a shot.  The only thing I'll add is that the fics for #2 both go against D/G, so Fire & Ice purists will not want to read those; and the fics for #1 and #4 both have some NC-17 moments.

Have you ever read Flight of the Thestrals on FF.net? I ;hearts& it. I can't remember the author, but it's good. a few 'WTF' moments, but you get over it. Much smut, but you get used to it.

[identity profile] mugglechump.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I have read it, and enjoyed it although the plot's gotten a bit convoluted. There is a lot of nice smut. The author is GD-7 or something similar. I'll tell you the truth why I never recommend that story, the author irritates me. She gets very rude with people who give her constructive criticism, and her comments always have this air of 'How dare you question anything I do. Haven't I written this epic length story just for you people? You should bow down to my greatness.' The story is good, though.

Yeah, i agree with u completely. the author of 'Flight of the Thestrals' GD-7, is a really good writer... but the concept of accepting a compliment at its face value, is something that she never quite got.

As much as i enjoyed the story and her imagination, there were so many twists to that story with so many sub-plots, the main story line got totally lost toward the end. pity it was abandoned as well – I would have loved to see what happened to the many characters she invented.

[identity profile] mugglechump.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think 'Flight' is really abandoned, she's just working on 'Pre-Flight' for the time being. I haven't bothered with the prequel since I've gotten so tired of the author's attitude, but I still have an alert set up to tell me if she updates 'Flight'. Her OCs were very inventive, to say the least. And I never would have thought Ron/Blaise/Pansy would be so appealing.

Since i am not registered at FF, and if it's not too much of a problem, do drop me a line if this ever updates. i would love to see how she ends this one.

Thanks!

No problem, I'll let you know!

[identity profile] 13oct.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
O i forgot to add, i really enjoyed ur fic recs. i have read some of them but then hadn't read 'Diminished' by Lady Rhiyana. thanks!

[identity profile] mugglechump.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I'm always glad to turn people on to that story. Most of my fic friends are very strict about their D/G, so I never have anyone to talk to about 'Diminished'. Lady_Rhiyana has put it on hiatus, but I'll be prodding her from time to time. ;D

[identity profile] 13oct.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
:) i do love reading D&G but i honestly will read just about anything if it's well written. got any more recs that u like?

[identity profile] mugglechump.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Let me comb through my review history and I'll let you know if I come across anything interesting!

[identity profile] castoffstarter.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh I love other pairing recs! Thanks muchly, darling. There goes studying again! :-)

[identity profile] mugglechump.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Both 'Diminished' and 'The Painted Past' are great. TPP is VERY long. The last chapter took me 3 or 4 hours to read. Seriously. It's the only D/Hr that has ever held any real appeal for me, though. I hope you enjoy them!

[identity profile] castoffstarter.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I just finished Diminished. The story makes me uncomfortable but it's completely fascinating. And reccing it to me when it hasn't been updated is just evil, woman! Chapter 10 is a doozy!

I tried TPP. Read the first 2 chapters and couldn't do it anymore. I tried valiantly. My face was scrunched up the entire time but I kept going, you know, until I quit. No matter how many times I try, whenever I read D/Hr I get pissed off. Not because Draco is with Hermione, but because the Dracos from these types of stories are never 'Draco'. They are some pale imitation who don't have a backbone, who are completely bent to Hermione. Get a personality! *steps off soapbox* Sorry about that.

Anyway, if you have any other recs of different pairings (or no pairings) I'd love to read them. I'm always looking to expand my horizons...unless it's D/Hr. ;-)

[identity profile] mugglechump.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! I'm glad you're finding Diminished intriguing, and I appreciate the effort at TPP. I will refute your statement about Draco not being 'Draco', though. In TPP, you don't really find out anything about the true Draco until chapter 7 or so. There's a rather large twist, but I understand perfectly if you aren't enjoying it. D/Hr isn't generally my cup of tea either.

If you like crack!fic, check out this one: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2339157/1/
It's bizarre, but it always makes me laugh.

[identity profile] mugglechump.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll add one other little piece of information about TPP (just, you know, in case it changes your mind - not that I'm pushing *looks innocent*). The story is not all D/Hr. In fact, I don't think they'll be together at the end. It's more of a love triangle, and I suspect Draco will lose to his rival if either of them gets to be with Hermione when it's all said and done.

[identity profile] castoffstarter.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
If I give it another try, will you stop using the term D/Hr? It's making me feel very guilty/dirty at the moment.

Can I just start at Chapter 7 so I don't have to read Draco simpering and calling Hermione 'darling' and 'baby' as every other expression from his mouth? Or will I be too lost?

[identity profile] mugglechump.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
*snicker* Ok, I'll not refer to that term anymore. *giggles*
If you decided to read more, you could start at say, the bottom third of chapter 6, and just know that Hermione grew to love Draco even without her memory returning fully, and even though there are some nagging inconsistencies in what he says and the few memories she does have.

[identity profile] castoffstarter.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahaha! I just finished it! My stomach hurts from laughing so much. I'm getting bug-eyed stares from Thumper right now. Thank you so much for the rec!

I meant to ask, have you read all the stories I used on this meme? If not, get you butt over there!

[identity profile] mugglechump.livejournal.com 2006-10-03 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't, but I'm at work so I can't read 'em yet. I'll check them out tonight. ;D
