Every once in awhile, I'll find myself in a conversation with an atheist debating, in essence, whether or not I'm stupid for believing in God. In the end, this is where I stand on the matter.
Benefits of believing in God:
- When I am struggling in life, I get comfort and strength from the knowledge that God is looking out for me.
- I have a moral and behavioral standard to strive for, making me work to be a better person.
- My belief in an afterlife gives me incentive to keep striving for that goal, even when I am faced with great temptation.
- When I give in to temptation, I am comforted by the knowledge that God will forgive me for it.
- When my loved ones are in crisis, I am able to feel like I am helping them through my prayers, even when I am unable to help in other ways.
And, bottom line, if atheists are right, and there is no God and no afterlife, and all that happens when we die is that we cease to exist, well, I'll never know, will I?

I understand how people can doubt that there is a God. Faith can be a difficult thing to embrace. I don't understand how atheists can be so positive there isn't a God, when there is no more tangible proof that He doesn't exist than there is that He does.
