I'm working on expanding the Lucius/Ginny one-shot I did and I feel like sharing. No particular reason - I just want to. So, here's a little snippet from a little later on in the story.
Ginny knocked hesitantly on the door to Lucius’ office. She knew he disliked being interrupted, but it was an important matter. Certainly he would not resent the intrusion once he knew the purpose behind it. It was to further his goal after all.
“Come,” her husband called in the clipped, precise voice he used when he was irritated.
They’d only been married a few months, but Ginny had studied his moods intently. It was prudent to give a man like Lucius Malfoy as little opportunity as possible to catch you off guard.
Swinging the door open with more confidence than she actually felt, Ginny took a quick survey of the room. Lucius eyed her from behind his impressive desk; his mouth set in a thin line. Across from him was Draco, wearing an expression that matched his father’s.
Draco made no secret of the fact he did not support his father’s marriage. He thought it was terribly cliché to have a stepmother who was a year his junior. It was a bone of contention between father and son, though they still managed to work together.
“Yes, Ginevra?” Lucius asked, using her given name to further express his annoyance at her surprise visit.
Doing her best to appear contrite, Ginny spoke quickly, “I’m sorry to barge in, Lucius, but I had a few moments between appointments and I needed to know if you’ll be home at a reasonable hour this evening.”
He scowled. “And this was important enough to interrupt my meeting?”
Ginny nodded.
“Yes, there’s a matter of some urgency that requires your attention tonight.” Ginny stressed the last word in the hope he’d understand her meaning without additional prodding.
Unfortunately, irritation seemed to make Lucius oblivious to innuendo.
“What might that be?” he queried impatiently. “I’m expected to meet with some investors this evening. Draco and I have a lot of preparation to do.”
“Will you be out very late?” she asked.
“I imagine so. Entertaining investors generally makes for a long evening. What is this about?”
Ginny’s eyes flitted to Draco. “I’d prefer to speak with you privately.”
“Ginevra,” Lucius growled, “I’m very busy. What is it?”
Warmth flooded her cheeks, but she knew better than to push him further.
“I’m ovulating. If you want to try to conceive this month, now is the time.”
Casting a glance in Draco’s direction again, Ginny saw the distaste he was barely containing. Clearly he would have preferred to be excluded from this conversation.
Lucius merely smirked.
“I’m afraid I can’t get out of my meeting. We’ll have to take advantage of this break in your schedule,” he stated matter-of-factly. “Draco, would you excu-“
“Of course,” the younger man replied, cutting him off. “I’ll be in my office preparing some notes. We can continue when you return.” He wasted no time in fleeing the room.
Rolling her eyes, Ginny sniped, “Really Lucius, why don’t you just hang a banner on the door? ‘Shagging my wife. Back in five minutes.’”
“Five minutes?” Lucius scoffed. “My dear, when have I ever been so inattentive as to leave you after only five minutes?”
“Relax,” Ginny said, biting back a laugh at his wounded pride. “I’m not slandering your stamina. Truthfully, five minutes is all I can spare or I’ll be late for the hospital fundraiser.”
Regarding another WIP: The second chapter of my mail order bride fic should be finished soon.
