What an ill planned and ill advised 'show of solidarity'. For starters, while I don't agree with everything in the legislation that's being pushed, there is no question that the U.S. needs to tighten its borders. In this day and age, we just can't afford to be lax in our border security; there are just too many people that want to kill American just because they're Americans. Not to mention the insane amount of tax dollars being spent to support people that are in the U.S. without having gone through the proper steps to get here.
Secondly, it's not a matter of being anti-immigrant - it's a matter of being opposed to ILLEGAL immigration. And no, I will not call the 'undocumented workers'. They are here illegally, therefore, they are illegal immigrants. I understand why they would want to come to this country. I understand that coming here legally is a very long and difficult process that should be simplified. I realize that most of them are decent people that are just trying to support their families. None of that is an excuse for breaking the law. None of it.
So, a day where legal and illegal immigrants protest in disjointed ways across the country seems a bit pointless to me. The fractured way that they are doing it makes any significant impact unlikely. Illegal immigrants are usually living hand to mouth and really can't afford to take off a day to boycott and they are protesting for something that is already illegal.
Respect our laws, have your supporters lobby for a better way to handle legal immigration and, if you're going to protest, organize yourselves in a way that will do more for you than create a bit of media hype.
