I went to bed before midnight last night. I can't remember the last time I did that.

It's very sad when this sort of news is journal-worthy. The annoying thing? I'm still tired. Probably because I woke up around 4:00 and it took me awhile to get back to sleep. Middle-of-the-night brain function is irritating. I'd rather be sleeping, thanks very much.

Oh! A few nights ago I had a very odd dream. It involved mail-in votes for the next presidential election, which were written on large pieces of posterboard in multi-colored marker, that [ profile] water_jade and [ profile] stellarlyssa had sent to me to send in on their behalf because I was the only one still in Montana. Yeah, I don't know why Montana, but there you are. Delaney and Lys will be pleased to know that I can't even convince them to vote conservative in my dreams. *snicker*

Speaking of Lys, I've not spoken to her in a long time, even on LJ. Hi Lys! I miss you!

I got mail from [ profile] stellarlyssa! Hurrah! Also, I am practicing calling her by her real name, but I'm not sure I will ever give up 'Lys' entirely. I like Lys - it's got style, and so does she!

I've made a few icons recently and thought I'd share them. Please credit the artist where appropriate.

Art by [ profile] hooh: Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

And then there is this one, which is just a silly little creation of mine: Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

There is some really amazing art from [ profile] dgficexchange which I've made icons from, but I won't be posting them until a) the artists are revealed so they can be credited, and b) I work my way around getting the ok from the artists and the recipients. I don't want to use someone's gift without their permission, no matter how pretty an icon it makes. (So pretty!)

I'm off of work this morning because I was supposed to have an appointment with Verizon, but they actually managed to fix my phone yesterday. So now I can do other things like get my oil changed and maybe get a hair cut (or at least get Mer's hair cut - she's been after me about it for ages). The only downside is that I woke up with a headache again (I think I need to set up my humidifier), so I don't feel like doing much of anything.

I chatted with Lys for a little while on AIM last night. That always makes me happy.

I've begun to think that one of my friends keeps her away message on all the time and only chats with certain people, of whom I am not one. *sigh* That sounded far whinier than I intended. I just miss her.

ETA: Woohoo! The IMAX theatre is in fact NOT sold out. Mer and I are going to see OOTP next Tuesday at 7:00. I could have actually gone much earlier, but I'm hoping that it will be a little less crowded if I wait. (Leave me to my illusions, okay?) Leather-clad Lucius in IMAX, baby!
I don't think I'll have a chance to do a sparkly birthday banner, but:

You brighten my life, dear.
First, this may be my favorite story of the year thus far. Grannies with guns rock my socks.,2933,267540,00.html

Next, I had to tell you all about this site I heard about It's a really neat idea. If you need a loan, you can post on that site and, depending on how appealing they find your terms, people bid to loan you money. Conversely, if you are looking for a way to earn a bit more interest than your bank offers, you can go out and bid on the loans people are asking for. (Is this making any sense?)

For example:

John wants to borrow $5000, so he makes a post on prosper. His credit report and basic financial information is included, so that people can decide whether they want to bid on his loan. He indicates in his post that he'd like to get an interest rate of 15%.

In response:

Betty bids $50 towards the loan, offering 15% interest.
Joe bids $500 towards the loan at 14% interest.
Chris bids $100 towards the loan at 15%

and so on until the loan amount is reached. John's interest rate is an amalgam of the interest rates that have been bid. Prosper administrates the loan, receiving the payment and doles it out to the parties who bid on the loan in increments based on the amount the bidder put up and the interest rate they offered. I believe all loans are 3 years in length, so it's not a quick turn around, but if you only have a little bit to invest from time to time, it's a pretty neat way to go. The minimum bid is $50. There is risk, of course, since these are loans and there is always a chance of default. Still it's an interesting concept.

Also, for folks who can't/don't want to go through a bank for a loan, this offers another opportunity to get the money you need.

Anyway, I heard about it from Becky and Manny. They've bid on 8 or 9 loans so far (bidding fairly small dollar amounts). They plan to save the loan payments until they reach $50 and then alternate putting the amount into savings and re-investing on Prosper. It's not going to get them rich, but they're making better interest than they do with their savings account, and not having to invest a lot at a time, so it works for them. I just thought it was a pretty nifty idea, and thought I'd share it with you all.

Oh, and Lys will be home from Italy tomorrow. *SQUEE*

I've been a whiney, emo mess the last two days. I'd suspect PMS, except I haven't had period in probably five or six months, and I have no reason to think I'll have one anytime soon. Meh. Anyway, that's why I've not been on AIM much. I haven't really wanted to subject anyone to me in my present state of mind. Bitter would be an appropriate adjective to describe me at the mo'. Mean might be another good one, although it's not really intentional. I'm a mass of simmering rage, jealousy, self-doubt, and self-pity and it's really starting to become annoying.

In addition to the personal issues that are responsible for my emo-ness, yesterday I realized I had made a significant error on a piece of work I'd done for one of the division managers. I owned up to it straight away, but the DM was sufficiently irritated that he called my boss. Fortunately, Jeff is really laid back and the error itself was a very simple one, it just happened to have a big effect. So, I'm not worried about fallout from the mistake, it just irritates me when I do something stupid. Especially when it's high-profile.

Anyway, enough of that.

I called Lys today and got a hold of her. She was in Venice for Carnival. I'm glad I got to talk to her, although she was, of course, very busy with the goings-on so it was not perhaps the ideal moment to speak to her for the first time. It made me happy, though. I miss her.

Today I watched 'Snakes on a Plane'. I had no interest in this movie while it was in the theatre, but I'd heard some good things so I decided to check it out. I laughed my butt off. I don't think that's the reaction the producers were going for, but it was hilarious. The premise is ridiculous, really, and Juliana Marg-howeveryouspellherlastname did the worst bit of acting I've ever seen from her. I was rolling, though. Parts of it reminded me so much of 80s horror flicks, with the gratuitous boob shots and sex humor. Someone I've seen around LJ has a great Snakes on a Plane/Harry Potter icon. I must seek it out and steal it (with permission, of course).

Emmie, I mailed out your CD today. I'm sorry we didn't get to talk last night, but I was really out of sorts and wouldn't have been any fun. We'll catch up soon, though, okay?

I'm not sure if I mentioned it on here or not, but about two weeks ago my grandmother had a stroke. It wasn't a major one, but she's been in the hospital and then in a nursing home for rehab ever since. My mom is flying down to St. Pete on Wednesday to help get things ready for when she goes home again, and I'll be driving down in a little less than two weeks. More details on that as things get firmed up, but I plan to at least one stop on the way down to visit with a friend, possibly more if I'm passing through other folks' areas at a time convenient for lunch or chit chat.
Hello everybody! I hope your V-Day has been nice. Thank you, Urs, for the e-card - it was really cute! Also, thank you to everyone who sent me Valentinr greetings!

I stayed home from work today due to the ice that's all over the road. I managed to get a little work done, but I'll have quite a bit of time to make up. Meredith's school was closed, and will be closed again tomorrow. Poor James had to go into the office, but he was allowed to be late.

In TMI news, Picabo does not like ice. She adores snow, but when the snow has a thick layer of ice on top it stops her from being able to sniff the ground. The sniffing is apparently a crucial component of deciding where to do one's business. She was most displeased. She pacified herself by taking a dump in front of the house where her doggy nemesis lives while I was not paying attention. Her attempt at insulting Robin (the other dog) was thwarted, though, as I did eventually notice the poop and bagged it like a good pet owner.

I talked to Gina today! I got bored with working, so dialed her up and we chatted for quite a while. Lots of giggling and silliness. The highlight of my day. :D *huggles Gina*

Tried to call Lys since I was home at a time when it was still daytime in Italy, but couldn't reach her. Bummer. I miss my Lys!

I'm trying to finish up a story for [ profile] smut_friday, but give my general lack of creativity lately, and my waffling over scenes of lemon in general, well, we'll see...

Tomorrow I'll be posting my lyric quiz answers. If you haven't guessed and you'd like to, here is the link:

Oh! Emmie - I finally burned Flood for you, along with a few other random songs. I'll try to get it mailed in the next few days.

I watched Lost tonight. Poor Desmond.

Today is the day that my entire office moves from one building into another. We were supposed to be able to work until 2:00, which most of us really needed in order to get our work even remotely close to done. However, at about 11:15 word came down that we needed to expedite our absence from the building. i.e. Get out now or very, very soon. Now would be preferable. So, after ensuring that everything in my office was packed up and labeled, and helping to ensure that the common areas of our suite were completely packed, I left. That was probably around noon. So, hurrah for a short day, but boo because we are required to make up our time. So, yeah, mega boo for that. It seems to me that if I don't have an office to work in, and the server is down for the move, I should be able to just charge to overhead for the time I HAVE to miss. Unfortunately, the higher-ups don't think that way. Bunch of boo-boo heads.

Yes, I just said boo-boo heads.

On my way home I stopped and got lunch, then went to Borders and spent too much money. I got one book for Meredith and seven for me. That seemed fair. Two of my books were free, so woot for that.

Now I am home, trying to convince myself to ignore the lure of the internet, my new books, and Sims 2, and instead work on writing fic. What a novel idea. Can I pull it off? Time will tell, but so far (seeing as I'm on LJ) it's not looking good.

I've exchanged LJ and facebook comments with Lys, which is about as close as I can get to chatting with her for the time being. She has mailed me a letter. These things make me happy.

Note to Gina: I miss you, dear. I hope things are okay, and that you come back soon! How am I supposed to hold Crazy Bitch meetings without my co-founder?

Oh! I was talking with Meredith last night about what made her decide to break up with the boy I didn't like. Apparently this BF told Meredith that he wanted to have a baby with her - now. Mer was very much like, "WTF, dude? You're nuts!" As was I. Hopefully the saga of the freakishly stupid boyfriend is now over.

I wonder if there are any Cheez-Its left...

I miss Lys.

And I feel rather pathetic tonight.
Thank God it's Friday. This week has dragged on and on, and I've accomplished virtually nothing. *sigh* At least I remembered to pay my rent on time, though. Yay me.

Responses to my question yesterday were interesting. I got six yeses, four nos, and one combination of the two. I suppose it's a definitive maybe.

Meredith came home early yesterday because she was feeling poorly. She's had a cold and cough for a couple weeks. The school nurse said that there have been a couple cases of Whooping Cough at the school, and that we should probably take Mer to the doctor to see if she's got it. So, this morning I took her to the doctor. He said he doesn't think she had Whooping Cough, just a sinus infection, but he put her on an antibiotic that would take care of either issue just in case. I dropped her off at school, ran some errands, and came to work. As I walked into my office my cell phone rang, it was the school nurse. Apparently Virginia school regulations state that any child suspected of having Whooping Cough must stay out of school for five days, so that they don't infect other kids. I explained that Mer isn't suspected of having it, the doc just prescribed an medicine that would treat it as a precautionary measure. It's much more likely that she has a sinus infection. In any case, the nurse said (apologetically), with any infection she needs to stay home for 24 hours after starting antibiotics. In order for them to allow her back without the five day banishment, I have to get the doctor to fax them a letter stating that he doesn't not suspect she has Whooping Cough.

1) According to the doctor, Whooping Cough can be dangerous for babies and other such small people, but for adult-sized folks it isn't really that big a deal. This regulation may make sense for elementary school children, but for high schoolers it's kind of stupid.
2) Sinus infections are pretty low on the contagious scale.
3) Meredith does not need to miss more school. Seriously folks, she does not need your help to get crummy grades.

At least I talked them into letting her walk home. I'd just gotten to work when they called. I was not about to turn right around and drive 40 minutes back to P'Ville. Now if the doctor would just call me back.

And Lys leaves for Italy in six days. *sniffle*
